Butterflies are carbon-free

For many years, Arjowiggins has manufactured Eural – a 100% recycled paper - at its Le Bourray mill in France producing 110 000 tonnes a year. To further support the innovation in environmental paper during 2007, Arjowiggins acquired Dalum Papir, a Danish producer of premium recycled paper. Dalum Papir manufactures Cyclus, the leading European brand of paper produced using 100% recycled fibres and a manufacturing process that uses only one tenth of the energy necessary to produce virgin fibres making it virtually carbon neutral. As a result, Arjowiggins now supplies 40% of the European market. Finally, in 2008, Arjowiggins completed the acquisition of Greenfield sas, the leading European manufacturer of process chlorine free FSC-certified de-inked pulp that produces 140 000 tonnes a year.

The integration of the Dalum and Greenfield businesses marked a signif icant step in the company’s strategic shift towards ‘green’ coated and uncoated papers in Europe. With its efficient and innovative R&D coupled with the expertise of Greenfield producing high quality recycled pulp means that Arjowiggins is ideally placed to focus on cutting-edge technology and with the capability to develop new recycled papers offering customers the pioneering solutions best suited to their specific needs for high quality eco-responsible paper.

This step in Arjowiggins green strategy enables the company to launch two new products with a range of FSC 100% recycled papers, namely Cocoon. Antalis will be the distributors of Cocoon in South Africa and feel that it is a welcome addition to their already broad range of products. ‘With the launch of the Cocoon range, we will continue to differentiate Antalis South Africa through the Arjowiggins portfolio of new and innovative world-class products and services,’ says Antalis marketing manager, Caroline Coughlan. ‘This is the first time that we have launched a new product in three years and the significance of this product must lie in the fact that we went out to the market and asked them what they wanted. The overwhelming majority of customers where looking for a green solution to their printing needs. Coupled to this Cocoon, along with our Munken Reviva, comes in as one of our most affordable recycled products. Histor ically, recycled paper was prohibitively expensive but, with the economies of scale, it is getting cheaper and therefore far more attractive to customers. We did a road-show launch, across the country, and the response was phenomenal.’

The Cocoon range begins with two new products namely the Cocoon Offset, an uncoated offset paper available in the widest range of 10 substances from 80 g/m² to 350 g/m², suitable for offset printing and converting, and Cocoon Preprin, an uncoated preprint laser paper available in six substances from 80 g/m² to 160g/m² which will be suitable for digital and laser printing. Both papers, according to Coughlan, will deliver ultimate credentials with the highest whiteness - CIE 150 - and outperform competitor products on the recycled papers market further enhancing Arjowiggins position as market leader. ‘Caring for the environment is a corner stone of the Arjowiggins’ and Antalis’ corporate strategy. For years, Eco-conception, sustainable forest management and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have inevitably become essential issues. Recognising this Arjowiggins has introduced an Environmental Management Systems programme so it can constantly monitor compliance with regulations, analyse the environmental impact of its activity, and draw up action plans to improve environmental performances. The carbon footprint of Cocoon already delivers very low carbon emissions, and Arjowiggins continues to work towards eliminating all remaining greenhouse gas emissions. Essentially, Cocoon is manufactured from FSC 100% recycled pulp, supporting responsible use of forest resources and is produced in two mills in France, which are ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and FSC certified.’
